Author Interview: David Bisek

You probably already know David Bisek as a Community Associate at Groover Labs. He is also the founder of Food Rise Marketing, a food industry marketing consultancy. Now, David can add to his list of accomplishments that of author. He recently contributed a chapter to the newly released book, The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever, a collaborative effort spearheaded by best-selling author and marketing guru Mark Schaeffer. David worked with a global community of marketers to develop and publish the book, which is available here.

We sat down with David to learn about the book project, ask about his experience on such a wide-ranging effort, and hear about his work at Groover Labs. If you read closely, you might even pick up a tip or two about the power of emotion in brand development.

Congratulations, David!

Congratulations on the launch of your new book, The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever. The book has been a collaborative effort, meaning there are several contributing authors. How did that come about?

Thank you! I'm a part of a community of professional marketers from across the globe, led by best-selling author Mark Schaefer. We decided to write a collaborative book full of actionable marketing tips and insights. Each chapter is written by a marketing professional based on their subject matter expertise. Mark challenged us to write content that was unique and couldn't be found in other marketing books. I think everyone stepped up and delivered.

How did marketing guru Mark Schaefer's community impact the development of the book?

The goal of our community is continual education and experimentation from a marketing perspective. We've been spending time with AI, the Metaverse, Web3 and learning how those intersect with modern marketing. It's really been an opportunity for professional development for me. As far as we know, this is the first book written entirely by a Web3 community.

Different authors were responsible for different chapters based on areas of expertise. What chapter did you write? Can you give us a teaser tip from the chapter?

My chapter is, "How To Build An Exceptional Brand". I'm a huge proponent of how critical customer experience is to the health of a brand. One of my tips is to intentionally design a brand experience by asking yourself, "What do I want my customers to FEEL when they interact with my brand and what do I want my customers to SAY about their experience with my brand?" Exceptional brands are built when you design an experience based on the desired outcome.

How was it working with so many different contributors on one project?

It's been incredible to see the collaboration. The authors are a diverse group of marketers with widely different expertise in their respective industries. Everyone stepped up and contributed. Professional editors jumped in to review chapters. Someone else utilized their AI expertise to create the cover. Others developed marketing collateral and graphics. It truly has been a team effort.

While we're here, tell us about Food Rise Marketing, your independent consultancy. You have extensive experience in the food marketing industry. How did your food industry experience factor into the section you authored in the new book?

Yes! I've been professionally marketing for 18 years now - the majority of my time I've focused on the consumer packaged food and food production industries. I spent nearly a decade at Cargill, followed by time at Whole Foods Market before launching my own consultancy where I now help guide brand development and marketing strategy.

With that experience in mind, I wrote my chapter for the non-marketer, similar to the clients I've worked with over the years. My goal was to provide tips that are easy to implement but provide the most impact to brand development.

How do you feel about adding the title "author" to your resume?

You know, it's a bit surreal. It's been in the back of my mind for a long time now that I'd like to write a book. Now that I've had the experience of contributing to a book, it's given me the encouragement I need to eventually write a book of my own.

Shameless plug: what do you like about Groover Labs?

I like the community that's being built here. There are always interesting people in the building and you never know what a day will bring, or who will walk though the doors. I started working at Groover Labs originally in the hot seats for co-working, then found an opportunity to work the front desk part time. I enjoy the connections I've made here.

How can someone buy The Most Amazing Marketing Book Ever?

Thank you! The book is available in print, Kindle and audio formats on Amazon here.
