Groover Labs plans to stream a Linda Hall Library program later this month about sports-related concussions.

Linda Hall Library is a Kansas City, Missouri, research library focused on science, engineering and technology. Groover Labs co-founders Curt Gridley and Tracy Hoover are longtime financial supporters of the library.

The program will delve into how concussions impact athletes who compete in a variety of sports. The library noted on its website that “with the popularity of sports at an all-time high, recent scientific research has focused on identifying concussions, creating return-to-play protocols and inventing hi-tech equipment to prevent brain injuries.”

Part of the library’s 2020 Science Forum, the program should be especially relevant for parents, young athletes, coaches, trainers and school administrators.

It will feature moderator Steve Kraske, an associate teaching professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City who also is the host of “Up to Date,” a daily talk show on public radio KCUR-FM in Kansas City.

Panelists are:

• Margaret “Meg” Gibson, a physician for the Sports Medicine Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. She also serves as the Fellowship Director for the UMKC Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and is the head team physician for the UMKC Athletics Department. 

• John Cagle, senior manager of Advanced Concepts at sports technology company VICIS, Inc., which makes top-rated football helmets used by players on 28 of 32 NFL teams.

• Tim Grunhard, a former football player selected by Kansas City in the second round of the 1990 draft. After his NFL career, he was head football coach at Bishop Miege in Roeland Park, Kansas, for six years and offensive line coach at the University of Kansas for two years.

The streaming event in Wichita will feature Jeremy Patterson, the Executive Director of Innovation and New Ventures and Dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovation at Wichita State University. Patterson is the Katherine & Edith Erker Endowed Professor, the Director of the Human Performance Laboratory and Director of WSU Interdisciplinary Group for Emerging Technologies.
